An Angel Like a Chariot

Writer: Paul HawkinsPaul Hawkins

In the manner of William Blake:

“An angel rides Earth like a chariot,

its sphere enfolded in his wings,

and steers it towards oblivion

and the blessings that it brings.

To plunge it through a purging fire

to burn distortion from desire,

to yoke our willfulness to purpose,

to cast us towards what came before us."

a kind of revolutionary image, a metaphor for a personal, purgatorial reawakening.
